Missing teeth are not only an aesthetic concern but also an oral health concern. We understand how frustrating it can be to have a missing tooth. One of your tooth-replacement options is a dental bridge. Bridges literally close the gap between teeth with crowns, restoring the function and appearance of your smile.
Whatever your reason for needing to replace missing teeth is, dental bridges are an excellent replacement option. For your Austin dental bridge, call Dr. Carmona at Austin Prosthodontics today!
Replacing missing teeth is essential because the gap left by missing teeth can lead to numerous oral health problems. These problems include:
Missing teeth can lead to many oral health problems. By supporting the surrounding oral structures and closing the gap left from missing teeth, dental bridges have both cosmetic and long-term wellness advantages. Dental bridges are custom-made appliances that are specially made to blend seamlessly in with the rest of your teeth.
A dental bridge uses two teeth on either side of the missing tooth to support a prosthesis, also called the pontic. Your crowns will be custom made to blend in with the rest of your teeth and restore the functionality and appearance of your smile.
A traditional bridge is a bridge supported by two crowns on either side of the gap with the replacement tooth in the center. For this type of appliance, Dr. Carmona will need to prepare the teeth that will support the bridge. That is, he will need to shave down the enamel on the supporting teeth to be able to accommodate crowns that will hold the pontic in place.
An implant-supported bridge uses two implants to support the pontic as opposed to two of your natural teeth. This type of bridge often takes longer because you will need dental implant surgery. Your bridge will still be supported by two teeth, but it will be supported by two crowns that are permanently affixed to dental implants.
While both types of bridges have their merits, Dr. Carmona will work closely with you to determine which type of bridge is right for you.
Getting a dental bridge typically takes two visits plus a consultation. During your first visit, Dr. Carmona will prepare your supporting teeth by wearing down the enamel enough to accept the crowns that will support the prosthesis. After he takes impressions of your prepared teeth, he will fit you with a temporary bridge.
During your second appointment, Dr. Carmona will remove your temporary bridge and place your permanent porcelain bridge. During this visit, he will check to make sure that the bridge fits properly and supports your bite. This process may take several weeks. Once Dr. Carmona is sure that your bridge properly fits, he will permanently cement it in place.
